AI Research Labs in Australia: A 2026 Map

A sourced map of AI research labs in Australia as of October 2026: university institutes, CSIRO and commercial labs, each with one checked line.

Australia's AI research labs sit in three places: university institutes, CSIRO as the national science agency, and a small group of commercial labs. This map lists twelve of them as of October 2026. Each entry carries one line drawn from the organisation's own page, a link to that page, and the date we checked it.

Ertas AI, which publishes this site, is one of the commercial labs on the list. It appears in the same format as the others, and the commercial labs are listed in alphabetical order.

How was this map put together?

We started from the institutions that appear on Google Australia for searches such as "best AI research labs Australia" and "AI research lab Melbourne" in October 2026, then added CSIRO and the commercial labs that surface in the same results and in Australian press coverage. Every line quotes or closely paraphrases the organisation's own page, checked on 28 October 2026.

One entry differs: we found no company website for Metacognition, so its line cites the press reports of its funding. Many other universities and companies in Australia run AI groups, and this first version covers the labs that surfaced in those searches.

Which universities run AI research institutes?

    • Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML), Adelaide University. Conducts research and development in machine learning, computer vision, deep learning and AI, from Lot Fourteen, South Australia's innovation district. AIML, checked 28 October 2026.
    • Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative (A2I2), Deakin University. A research initiative that translates AI and machine learning research into technologies for industry, co-directed by Distinguished Professors Svetha Venkatesh and Kon Mouzakis, with facilities at Deakin's Melbourne Burwood and Geelong Waurn Ponds campuses. A2I2, checked 28 October 2026.
    • La Trobe AI Institute, La Trobe University. Brings together the university's AI research centres, including the Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation (ACAMI) and the Centre for Data Analytics and Cognition (CDAC). La Trobe AI, checked 28 October 2026.
    • Applied AI Research Centre, Macquarie University. Works with organisations across healthcare, education, finance, law enforcement and sustainability, and reports over $51 million in research grants since it was established in 2019 (as of October 2026). Applied AI at Macquarie, checked 28 October 2026.
    • UNSW AI Institute, UNSW Sydney. The university's flagship research institute in AI, data science and machine learning, led by Director Dr Sue Keay and Chief Scientist Professor Toby Walsh. It supports more than 300 academics and over 50 research groups, labs and centres (as of October 2026). UNSW.ai, checked 28 October 2026.
    • AI research at the School of Computing and Information Systems, University of Melbourne. Covers deep learning, data mining, machine learning, natural language processing and agent-based systems, with groups that include the Artificial Intelligence Assurance Lab and the AI and Autonomy Lab. CIS AI research, checked 28 October 2026.
    • Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute (AAII), University of Technology Sydney. Develops theoretical foundations and advanced algorithms for AI, across machine learning, computer vision, data science and brain computer interfaces. AAII, checked 28 October 2026.

Where does CSIRO fit in Australian AI research?

    • Technology Research Unit, CSIRO. Australia's national science agency groups AI, robotics, cybersecurity, quantum and advanced manufacturing in this unit, which works with industry, government and researchers to adopt and scale those technologies. The address of CSIRO's Data61 business-unit page now redirects to it. CSIRO Technology, checked 28 October 2026.

Which commercial AI labs operate in Australia?

    • Ertas AI, Brunswick, Melbourne. An applied AI research lab that trains specialist models for the work businesses and their AI agents repeat. Its research runs under three themes: right-sized specialists, models that learn from traffic, and agentic unit economics. About Ertas AI, checked 28 October 2026.
    • Harrison.ai, Sydney. Builds medical imaging AI tools for clinicians, including a radiology foundation model, Harrison.Rad 1.5, and says 3,500 clinicians at over 1,000 sites across four continents use its AI solutions (as of October 2026). Harrison.ai, checked 28 October 2026.
    • Metacognition, Adelaide. Founded by Professors Anton van den Hengel and Stephen Gould with Dr Paul Dalby, it builds software to make AI agents and robots reliable, including an operating system called Zeos (Startup Daily, 28 October 2026). It raised $10 million from Main Sequence (CSIRO Alumni, 15 September 2026), and Airtree added $5 million to bring its pre-seed round to $15 million (Forbes Australia, 28 October 2026). Checked 28 October 2026.
    • Sovereign Australia AI. Says it is building foundational language models trained and deployed in Australia, and describes its first model, Ginan, as free and open source. Sovereign Australia AI, checked 28 October 2026.

Who are the leading AI labs in Australia?

The answer depends on what "leading" measures. By research headcount, the UNSW AI Institute supports more than 300 academics (as of October 2026). By early-stage funding, Forbes Australia reported Metacognition's $15 million pre-seed as nearly ten times the 2026 median of $1.6 million (28 October 2026). By clinical deployment, Harrison.ai says its tools are used at over 1,000 sites (as of October 2026).

Each measure points to a different kind of partner, so the better question for a buyer is which lab fits the problem in front of them.

How do you choose an AI lab partner?

    1. Match the lab to the question. University institutes and CSIRO suit open research questions, grant-funded projects and PhD-level collaboration, and each lists its partnership routes on the pages linked above. A commercial lab suits a problem tied to a product or a production workload.
    2. Look for published, dated results. A lab that publishes its methods and measurements, with the date and the comparison, gives you something to check before you sign.
    3. Ask who owns what the work produces. Intellectual property, trained models and derived data each need an owner in the agreement.
    4. Ask how a result reaches production. Some labs hand over a report or a prototype; others deploy and run what they build. Know which one you need.
    5. Insist on measurement against your own data. Public benchmarks show what a method can do. Your examples and your quality bar show what it will do for you. Our guide on when an enterprise should build a custom AI model sets out an evaluation you can run with any partner.

For the work Ertas AI does, the research page lists our published methods and results, and the adaptive model endpoint is how that research runs in production.

    Frequently asked questions

What are the main AI research labs in Australia?

As of October 2026, the main groups are university institutes (AIML at Adelaide University, Deakin's A2I2, the La Trobe AI Institute, Macquarie's Applied AI Research Centre, the UNSW AI Institute, the University of Melbourne's School of Computing and Information Systems and UTS's AAII), CSIRO's Technology Research Unit, and commercial labs including Ertas AI, Harrison.ai, Metacognition and Sovereign Australia AI.

Is there an applied AI research lab in Melbourne?

Yes. Deakin University's Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative has facilities at its Melbourne Burwood campus, La Trobe University runs the La Trobe AI Institute, the University of Melbourne's School of Computing and Information Systems hosts several AI research groups, and Ertas AI is an applied AI research lab in Brunswick, Melbourne.

What is the difference between a university AI institute and a commercial AI lab?

A university institute is funded mainly through research grants and industry partnerships, and its output is mainly papers, trained researchers and collaborations. A commercial lab is funded by investors or customers, and its research feeds a product or a deployment.

How much funding have Australian AI labs raised in 2026?

One reported example from 2026: Metacognition in Adelaide raised $10 million from Main Sequence (CSIRO Alumni, 15 September 2026), and Airtree added $5 million for a $15 million pre-seed round (Forbes Australia, 28 October 2026).
