What is Frontier Lab?
An AI company that builds the most capable general-purpose models of its time and sells access to them, usually through a chat app and an API.
Definition
A frontier lab, or frontier AI lab, is a company that trains the most capable general-purpose AI models available at a given time. OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind, the developers of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, are the names most often meant, and the phrase "the big 3 AI labs" usually refers to them.
The Frontier Model Forum, an industry body, defines a frontier AI model as "a general-purpose model that outperforms, based on a range of conventional performance benchmarks or high-risk capability assessments, all other models that have been widely deployed for at least 12 months". Its members as of 29 October 2026 are Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI. There is no fixed count of frontier labs, because the frontier moves as models improve.
Frontier labs are one of three kinds of AI lab that carry most of the attention in 2026. Neolabs raise large sums for a research bet before they have a product. Applied AI labs train models for specific work businesses already do.
Why It Matters
Frontier labs hold most of the value in the field: NEA put 93.6% of roughly $1.68 trillion in AI research lab valuations with frontier generalists as of 30 April 2026, led by OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and Safe Superintelligence. Their models are the default choice for most AI products, so their prices, rate limits and model retirements shape the cost and reliability of everything built on them. For a business, that makes a frontier model a rented generalist: excellent across open-ended work, and priced per token on every task, including the repeated ones.
How It Works
A frontier lab pretrains very large models on broad data at great compute cost, then post-trains them to follow instructions, use tools and meet its safety policies. It sells access through consumer apps and a paid API, and it releases new model versions on its own schedule, retiring older ones. Membership of the Frontier Model Forum requires publicly disclosed guidelines for evaluating and mitigating the risks of frontier models, and safety review processes that can delay or suspend a deployment.
Example Use Case
A startup prototypes an AI agent on a frontier model's API because it handles almost any instruction well from day one. Once one step of the agent, such as extracting fields from invoices, runs thousands of times a day with the same long prompt, the team compares the frontier model's cost per task with a model trained for that step, and keeps the frontier model for the open-ended parts of the workflow.
Key Takeaways
- A frontier lab builds the most capable general-purpose AI models of its time.
- OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind are the labs usually meant by "the big 3".
- The Frontier Model Forum's members as of 29 October 2026 are Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI.
- Frontier labs held 93.6% of AI research lab valuations as of 30 April 2026 (NEA, citing PitchBook).
- Businesses rent frontier models per token; for repeated tasks, a trained specialist can cost less per task.
How Ertas Helps
Ertas AI is an applied AI lab that trains specialist models for the tasks businesses and their AI agents repeat, the work most often sent to frontier models today. A trained specialist cuts cost on two fronts: a lower price per token than the frontier model it replaces, and fewer tokens per task, because the instructions repeated in every prompt are trained into the model. It runs through the adaptive model endpoint, Ertas-managed, in the customer's own cloud or on-premise. The endpoint is currently invitation only, and we are developing a more streamlined version for wider access.
